My father-in-law has an old Massey-Ferguson #3 bailer. He"s had me look at it a couple of times to see if can help him figure out why the bailing twine on one side breakes every few bails. I can"t see anywhere the twine is hanging up or catching on something. Any ideas?

I assume you are using new twine?

Below the knotters and disc holders there is this hook like guide that the twine rubs on. On our MF 3 the guide was worn in a groove knife sharp. My guess is every time the packer would make a stroke it would saw on the twine. Ours would break the right hand twine about an inch and a half below the knot. We blunted the edge and haven't had anymore problems at that particular point. I still bust a few bales when i feed it too much too fast though.

I'd guess the bill hooks or whatever other parts are in there are getting worn. I'm not sure what the wear parts are or how much they would be, but if you run 9000 in there now, go to 7200. It should take care of the problem, if only for a little while. We've been running 7200 now for 5-8 years, no problems in our 12.

Some good ideas posted here already.

Check the entire twine path for sharp edges and pinch points or areas where the twine may be binding.

I would imagine something is worn enough so that when the plunger is shoving more hay into a bale, the twine is rubbing on a sharp edge and occasionally rubbing hard enough to break/cut.
