Is it just me?? Do all realtors try to screw buyers over?? I have met 5 or 6 so far, and have yet to meet a honest and forcoming one. Is it just me?

The realtor generally gets his/her commission from the seller, so it's their job to get the highest price they can for the property; no different than an auctioneer trying to get the highest bid.

But there are plenty of very crooked real estate agents who will cheat the seller by arranging a sale at below market price to one of their friends. Those people are thieves.

A lot of people taking a beating in buying and selling real estate because they don't do their homework and they expect guidance from a real estate agent, who in most instances is as uninformed as they are. There is a very good book that I used to help me purchase a couple of places in the country that I did very well on. The info in it allowed me to be an informed buyer and to "hold the real estate peoples feet to the fire". In an area wher 40 to 80 acre places routinely sell for $3000/acre, I bought my place for less than$1700/acre. The title of the book is "Finding Your Place in the Country" by Les Scher. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone buying real estate whether or not it was in the country or the city because the priciples are the same.

Farmer,
My wife was a realtor for a few years and quit when our kids were born. There are a few honest ones, but few and far between. There is no telling how much it cost her trying to do the right thing, but was worth it in the long run. If I remember right, the majority of the time the agent is supposed to be working for the seller unless you sign with them as a buyer's agent. That was in Alabama anyways.

Not just you. I think they are second worst, and it would be a challenge to beat an attorney..... They try to screw over their own client... if the sale goes for a couple grand extra(more than the buy and seller would have agreed on) and they make an extra 20 bucks..... Realtors are not your friend....

I sold a house 2 years ago.... it was on the 'market' for 2 days... 13K in realtor fees... Now what did they do to deserve 13K(and yes they did bring a buyer to me..... ) It's a racket....

Traded my farm in a 1031 deal 3 1/2 years ago.The stories I could tell about realtors would shock you.Some of the most underhanded deals,you would simply not believe.It was an incredible experience that I will never forget.Oftentimes it was the seller who took in the rear and was never the wiser.On one deal the realtor skimmed off $27,000 and another deal cost that seller the extra $80,000 that I was willing to go on the purchase price plus it cost my realtor rep his share of the commision.The realtor sold it to his buddy to boot.Absentee owner,Missouri Farm Land Trust was the big loser at $80,000.

There must be some good ones who know their job and are honest as well, I just haven't found any that were all three. Usually they don't know the law. Had one Record restrictive covenents on land I bought after the closing! She just forgot to do it before the closing - took months to get them gone. Her broker claimed that the property transferred when the deed was recorded instead of when the money changed hands - deed recording is optional in Iowa. Studing for yourself is well worth the time, IMHO.
