By looking a "Hauling Site" I can determine the loaded mile rate but what about unloaded miles ? My friend has pickup & gooseneck trailer,we will go 150 miles to pickup a rolling tractor about 4,000 lbs. The loaded rate is about $1.30 to $1.50 a mile. What about unloaded 150 miles.
Central Illinois to Central Missouri. Gas is about $2.10 per gal. What is fair amount ?
Thanks

Thanks for replies, and no I am the guy that wants the tractor and friend is not in the hauling business. We trade equipment and labor back and forth. So, I just wanted to be fair in compensating him for hauling tractor.

The unloaded miles is on your own. You can't haul the freight til you get to it. But I would not charge a friend to haul a tractor 150 miles. Let him buy your gas and eats if he offers but don't charge him a dime.

Yep, the unloaded portion of the trip is part of that loaded figure. The way a guy makes profit is to try to not be "unloaded" very often.

anywho....sounds like you are the friend...I would do as cowman suggests and pay fuel and food...and that should be a good start.

My thoughts exactly. Very few truckers ever get paid for empty miles.

A different twist, I just bought a MF and negotiated the delivery in the sale price, he woulden't budge on the Tractor price but he paid an outfit 1.75 per loaded mile to deliver it to my farm. I guess he needed the sale price for the books, made no difference to me. I saved 400 bucks and the wear and tear on my truck.
