Got a couple patches of Lambquarter in my wheat. Outside of pulling weeds over a couple acres can I fix this before the wheat is combined?

If I sprayed with 24D(Walking with hand sprayer) would that knock it down? The label said not to use it between the boot and dough stage. Being the novice I am I can only assume the dough stage is when there is wheat in the head and it is not quite hard.(wheat is just in the heads and the kernal is soft so maybe milk stage right now?)

After the wheat hardens can I walk the field and spray or is this a lost cause, a waste of time and a bad idea?

I would just turn out around the weedy area and not bale that part where thr weeds are if its that bad.Good advice given about combining it last also do it with an empty bin so you can keep it separate if theres alot of weeds in the wheat. No sence getting docked on a whole load.

heres what was in the last Univ. of delaware newsletter.


Harvest Aid for Small Grain � Mark VanGessel, Extension Weed Specialist; [email protected]

Roundup WeatherMax (up to 0.7 qt/A) or Touchdown (up to 1 qt/A) are labeled as harvest aids in winter wheat and barley. Applications must be made after the hard-dough stage and at least 7 days prior to harvest.

I seriously doubt using 2-4-D at this late stage of the game is the answer.I doubt the chemical will bring down the weeds.The weeds are too close to maturity themselves for the 2-4-D to be of much benefit.I would be more inclined to wack at them with a corn knife now if they are that much of a bother to you.I would just pull out and go around the patch when baling the straw.Probably would leave the patches and do them last with the combine too.Nothing worse that a plugged combine.lol,bob

If it's that bad, we'll usually hit it with Roundup about 2 weeks before harvest, that cleans it up more than you'd ever think. In fact, clean straw is worth so much more than wheat here that most people will now have a good wide sprayer come in and spray everything with Roundup preharvest to clean it up.

That won't hurt the wheat in any way? ie Elevators will still take it?

When do you do this(I know yousaid two weeks, but this is my first wheat)? When the wheat is starting to die?
