Will a haybine work for me?

I posted this in the Tractor forum but I think this may be a better place. I have a MF 255 and I used a NH 411 discbine to cut one field the other day, my tractor was sluggish and worked hard to run it. The 255 is rated at 50 hp. I picked up a manual for the discbine and it recommends a 80hp tractor. I can go get a haybine if i need it but i'm wondering if they cut well. I don't expect it to cut like a Discbine but I would like to see a good cut. Any thoughts? thanks in advance

We run a New Idea 292 9' mow/ditioner(sickle type) w/ our 285, works great. We run in 1st gear high range, MP in high. The 292 has atleast 2 different size drive sprockets to speed or slow the reel, the manual we have for it's blue counterpart (Ford 535) lists a 3rd, but I think it may be too fast for most applications. Our 285 runs it with HP to spare, I think it would be just right on your 255. If anything else, you can put the smaller drive sprocket on for the reel and go in 3rd/lo range MP high or 1st/high range MP lo. A good haybine can be had for a reasonable price. Just have to keep the sections in good condition and make sure the guards aren't worn out too much.

Hi, Disk bines like HP. I ran one last year with a MF165(52HP0), big first cut is a problem, 2nd cut OK. The weight of a disk bine will really push a small tractor around on hills. Get a JD 1219, it will due a great job with a 50HP tractor. A disk bine will only cut anything if you have 100+ HP. Bill

I have a NH 489 with stub guards and I really like that haybine. In down hay I speed up the reel and sometimes run at a slower speed but it does a good job for me. If you slowed down your travel speed will the 255 still run sluggish? We used to have one ourselves and they were too high geared for the amount of HP that they had.

Good point about the gears, I was telling my brother that I wished that the 255 had one more lower gear, it really needs it if your going to push the HP limit. I do thank everyone for thier feedback, I went to a small farm this morning and bought a NH 467 haybine. The farmer I bought from was running it with a 40hp or so David Brown. The 411 Discbine is an awsome piece of equipment but its going to sit this first cutting out.

I had a neighbor that swore by them the used a JD 3010 on it. He would always say that he could out cut anything else with his. Almost all of the hay that he had was forage sorghum, but he would also brag that he would go through atleast three gear boxes a year.
