hay moisture testers

Are the probe type digital moisture testers accurate enough to justify the expence? I just found out I can get a farmex tester through a tractor parts company that I dealer for $134.99. at this price I'm think it would be money well spent as I am tired of guessing moisture. I seem to tend to bale on the dry side and have a lot of leaf shatter.

I have two Farmex moisture testers. I really like having the probe type to monitor a stack after it is baled, especially with the thermometer.

I just installed a Farmex bale chamber mounted moisture meter. I have only used it on one cutting but it is nice to watch changes in the moisture content across a field. It will come in handy when we have to use hay preservative.

Hi, $134 is a great price, I payed $50 more for mine 5 years ago. Most of them are made by Farmex, I bought a JD last year off EBay, it was made too by farmex. Farmex will fix them reasonable, $30-$40. Bill

I have found it very handy to use expecially after rained on hay knowing when it is dry enough to bale. Seems I was waiting to long before trying it, pretty hard to pick up a round bale and see if it is heavy.

Seth - We bought ours last year from our NH dealer but found later that it was a farmex that we could have bought much cheaper from TSC.
I've been haying for over 40 yrs and NEVER had such a challenging year as 2004 !! However, thanks to the tester, we found that,although the moisture level increased after putting the hay in the barn, that the temperature inside the bales did not rise above the air temp. As a result, the stored hay did not mould and was all sold into the horse market. Others in our area actually had to unload their barns for fear of fire! As with all tools , common sense prevails, but I have a lot of respect for those testers now and will use the information gained by them as a guideline to make production decisions.
