bales stuck together

Put up about 500 squares last weekend using JD 346. I had huge windrows having raked two together in a brome field. Several time two bales would be stuck together as the hay was not completely cut between the two bales. This didn't happen a lot but I would rather things work right. I noticed that I was only getting about 6-7 strokes per bale due to heavy windrows but when I was done I looked at the knives and noticed a few dings in the edges. I didn't have this problem last year and was wondering if my knives were the problem or the heavy windrows. Was driving in first gear on a 4020 and the hay was just filling the baler.

Sounds like you have a knive clearance problem along with needing a sharpening. The clearance should be around .010 to .030" to work nicely.

Check your plunger guides, bearings etc. for wear.

I have to agree that it is a knife problem. The JD balers work the best with heavy windrows. I've used a 14T and now a 467. It is amazing how much hay they can take in and they just keep on going. I have plugged them, but it is pretty hard to do.

Check your plunger guides as well. I had my little ford do that. The knifes appeared to be right but under load the hay would fold over??? Turned out the plunger would move over (under load) just enough to allow some hay to not be cut. Adjusted the rails opposite the kinfes and problem went away.

I would agree on the knives. I have been told that in the days when all hay was cut with a sickle mower and not conditioned it was not uncommen to have some stick together, just food for thought as I dont know what you cut it with...Jim

I would check timeing and hay dogs on baler. How long are your bales? That is very few strokes per bale. Are your bales tight at all? On our 3 tie balers guys try for 9 to 12 strokes per bale.

Ok this is the 2nd time in the last day or so I have seen the trem haydogs, What the heck are they, I'm working on a 14-T and the manual refers to them also with a knoter problem it has but it doesn't tell me what they are. I may have known what they where 10 years ago but we just got this 14-T a week or so ago and its been 10 years since I played with one. Thanks for your answer

Hi Old , Randy here , I called you a few weeks ago about your parts baler . There are three hay dogs on a 14t . Look in the back of the bale chamber and you'll see them . Two on top 1 on the bottom . They look like wedges that drop into the bale chamber , they are spring loaded , much like the plunger stop at the bottom only they face the rear of the machine . They are right under the knotters . They keep the hay from backing up as the plunger moves forward . The cheese grater things bolted to the sides are the resistors as are the three ramps ( if they are there ) at the rear end of the needle slot just as the hay enters the tension chamber . I removed the ramps on a suggestion from the Deere dealer mechanic . They are more for very dry hay types , he suggested removing the cheese grater resistors also . I think for the next go round I'm going to follow his advice . I backed off the tensioners but the bales ( Baled slightly wet ) were still around 60-80lbs . Others may disagree with this suggestion so it might be a regional thing . I've only done this once so I'm far from experienced . Good luck with it ! ...Randy

Thanks, the manual says that maybe my problem with the knotter, but it didn't say what the hay dogs where. And it had been to many years since I last played with a 14-T, and now a friend picked one up and I get to get it working again if I can

Old,

I don't know what the haydogs on a 14T look like, but on my old IH 27 they are on top and bottom of the chute. They stick up and keep the hay from moveing back toward the front of the baler with the plunger. On the 14T they maybe on the sides and look like a fluted plate.

Bob,the fluted plates AKA cabbage cutters are not actually hay dogs.If my crs isn't to bad I think Deere called them side hay resistors.Hay dogs help hold hay towards rear of baler during tying mode while plunger is retreating.Tx Jim

I think you figured it out already. My NH68 did the exact same thing until I sharpened and adjusted the knife.
