I have my small 5 acres field, I drop my bales due to lack of a good sized hay rack. What do you all use to pickup you bales? Accumulator, bale wagons, banding machines? Real hard to find somebody around my parts that would stand on a rack and stack, they'd have to work and they won't go for that idea. Since it is just a one man show, I'm looking for some ideas on how to get the hay picked up quicker. What are your opinions on the afore mentioned pieces of equipment? TIA Rich

I use an old Farmhand bale-buncher/sled behind the baler. It drags the bales along with the baler until you trip the tailgate and let them out, 6-10 bales at a time. You can leave the bales in groups to load by hand. Basically saves having a truck driver.

Wouldn't dragging the bales along the ground increase the amount of dirt in the bales? How well do the bales hold up to being drug around a field? I'm interested in this form of stacking.

All my fields have good sod so dirt is not a problem. I make good tight bales (40#) and they don't seem to be hurt any. When the baler knotter misses and they break coming out there is more of a mess to clean up, specially if you don't see it right away. I have a welding/fab shop and I bought the sled sorta planning to make some because I heard nobody made 'em anymore, but I've only had one guy interested. Around here they use kickers or baskets.

sodo u have any pictures of this bale sled - Is this a simpler older version of the later Farmhand accumulator that is all hydraulic and puts them in the configuration ready for a loader?

I am looking for a very simple, maybe build it yourself kinda deal that would drag upto like 6 bales together to just dump in one spot

My wife has a camera but I haven't learned yet to get them on the computer or to get 'em on here. This rig is about 5' wide x 10' long. There are rods attached to the turned-up front extending to the back on the ground, about 8" apart. The bales ride on them. The back end of the rods are not hitched to anything so when you open the tailgate, which swings out from the top, the rods just slide out from under the hay as you are moving. After they pass under the gate which is dragging over them. the gate swings down and latches. The latching arrangement is the only thing that is at all complicated. A pipe sticks out each side at the gate bottom that is caught by a flat strip with notches on a pivot. The pipe turns when you pull the rope and a piece on the pipe pushes the strips up, allowing the gate to be pushed open by the bales as you're moving.

or buy one, sounds like exactly what I could use. 6 bales at a time is just about perfect for my little tractor/baler combo. I've got little irregular shaped fields and it seems I'm always climbing off the tractor to move bales to the side so I can bale some more.

You can order a reprint of an article on building one at the link below.

No, I don't have any monetary interest in this, but I'm going to order the article and see if it is helpful.

Hi Rich,

Do you have a hay basket (sweep head) for your loader?

Allan

Are you meaning to talk to somebody else Allan? I don't have a loader or a sweep head for it.
