Towing New NH 316 Home

Hi All,

I just purchased a NH 316 baler and will be driving on Friday to pick it up. I will have to make a 100 mile trip home and have some questions.

1)The tires look good, but my plan is to take some fix a flat, air tank, jack, lug wrench, etc. Is there a standard bolt pattern used so I can pick up a "spare" somewhere to take with me.

2) Any other items that I should take along for emergencies during the tow home?

I have hay ready to cut and bale and can"t wait to get this baby home.

Thanks all for the help! Baler is home and is fine. The seller offered to bring it to me and he travelled the 150 miles last night. Greased the bearings and everything worked out great. He stopped quite often and aid the hubs didn't even get warm. Will be baling soon!

Is this a small square baler? if so the baler will have standard implement wheels but it probably has a four bolt wheel on the pickup side and a six bolt wheel on the plunger side and different size tires. Ed

I'd be sure to take along my cell phone. Never know when you might have to call someone for help.
100 miles sounds like at least a 4 hour, maybe 5 hour, trip home with your new baler. Any chance of getting it on a flatbed trailer? That would get you home a lot faster and save some wear and tear on those baler wheel bearings. But then you've got trailer tires and bearings to be concerned about.
If you're pulling the baler home by itself, be sure to stop every hour or so to check the tightness of the lugnuts on the baler wheels. Just speaking from experience from one time I didn't check the lugnuts often enough! It cost me plenty!

If I were you I would take some wheel bearing grease and pack the wheel bearings. New Holland is not noted for over doing them when they are new. Even a brand new one going that far I would make the dealer pack the wheel bearings. And like the other post said have a keeper of some kind in the hitch pin.

I recently bought a JD 327 and had to travel 130 mi. to pick it up. It pulled so nice the first few miles of backroads,(long, slow route),that I ended up on the interstate for the last 60 miles. It actually pulled better than the tandem trailer that I had originally thought of using it to haul it home. (Go figure!) Just my $.02.
