Got my first hay in the barn

Well I used my new disc mower for the first time Sunday evening. Even with a few obstacles (light pole hidden in the grass) in the field it took about 1/3 the time that the older sickle mower took. Baled it on Monday evening all went great. Had it in the barn that evening. But our cool weather and lack of rain has hurt the quantity of hay . Last year I got 150 bales off this patch and this year it was down to 100 despite a better cutting job with the disc mower.

On the flip side I found about 80 acres of pecan grove that I get to mow and bale at the best possible price. Free. I went and looked at it yesterday and it was full of clover and hairy vetch so it should make some great hay and will be more than I need.

I live in Oklahoma. It is hot and dry and we had a good wind here at my place. It is quite common here to cut one day and bale the next afternoon. Later in the summer they can mow and condition in the morning and bale into round bales that afternoon. For squares you have too wait longer. If the weather is right you can bale next day even on alfalfa.

WOW!!! I thought we were doing good, down here.... I cut Wednesday evening (and into the night, quit around 9PM), raked Friday afternoon and baled Saturday. The hay was cured enough that I could've baled Friday (late afternoon/early evening), but was busy with that "work" thing....

Must have something to do with 95% humidity?

Steve
