I've been lurking here awhile, thanks for all of the "unknown" advice and suggestions!I took on a habitat restoration grant this spring that amounts to mowing about 35 acres of fallow farmland to prepare for reseeding in prairie grasses and forbs. The old 9n of my wife's grandfather's has been tapped for this project pulling an unknown brand 5' brush mower. This mower looks like it was cobbled together from a few different sources. Here are my questions: There business end of the mower has a 3' steel disc with the mounted blades. There was only one blade on it when I pulled it out of the brush, so I replaced it and added another across the way. It appears to have been designed for four blades, but I only had $$$ for two. How much of a difference will using only 1/2 of the blades make? How "sharp" should the blades be kept? When I bought them, the leading edge was approximately 3/16 roundover. The gearbox has broken free of its mountings and has a variety of creative quick-fixes sorta holding it in place. When I mow, it will occasionally start rattling and banging around until I run over the next sapling and then it will settle down again. I know I need to fix it, suggestions? The gearbox is in a steel box that it used to be bolted to. I've read a number of the safety and use articles here and in other places. Yeah the mower makes me nervous so I keep the kids about 7 miles away when I'm working... Thanks from a newbie!
