HI all , The hay's in the mow ! I raked Monday afternoon starting at noonthirty . I took off 1/2 day to get this done ! I thought that raking was the easy part . NOT ! Anyway it WAS the fastest part , about an hour to do 4 acres . Worked on the baler till about 4 putting on a counter and fussing and fretting over it like a mother hen . Put in two balls of new 7200 twine and tied them to the old 9000 that was in it when I bought it . I hope that works when it's time for that knot to pass ! Threaded the needles and turned it over by hand , looked in and all was good . Tripped the knotter and turned it over a second time to see . Left side tied , right side did too but knot didn't come off the billhook . Got out the leatherman and cut it all out of there . Tripped the knotter again and the same thing . Decided that I'd try it on hay so I went to the field . Tied first time and almost every time up til and beyond when I sheared a bolt trying to see how much I could feed it before it quit ! I'm not sure it actually missed any ties but when I went to pick up some of the first bales the twine broke right next to the knot . About nine of them . I loosened up the tensioners and the last 140 or so bales didn't have a problem . Put 189 bales through it . Bales are WAY heavy . Some where a little too wet . Most were good for a first timer ! Next time out I'm going to remove the resistors on the sides of the chamber and shorten the bales a little , now they are close to 4 feet . I wanted 36" but overlooked that part till I was loading them last night on the trailer . Only got about 40 to the barn by 10pm last night . Left the rest in the field . Flipped them all onto their sides . Had to bust about 15 open because they where already getting hot . Another learning experience ! I did get good looking bales though so that made me take the bad parts ( wet hay , Impatience ) . It's all in the barn now spread in two layers in the mow . Checked it often and haven't found any hot spots . Got my fingers crossed that it won't mold at the very least . Now I've got to work on the raking part . I couldn't figure out which direction to rake because of the way I cut it mostly . It came to points in the middle of the field . Next time I'm measuring both ends of the field so I can cut it at least in a tighter rectangle . But I did it and this ones over with , though I still have 2 acres to cut , with the way the weather looks for the next week that won't be any time soon . A very large robust THANK YOU !!! to all that have put up with inane qustions and me being generally bothersome ! I don't think I could've done it without this forum and all who frequent it . BUT , There's a lot to be pealed from your collective minds yet , so I haven't " left the building " ! Take care till the next round which I warn you now will be how to prepare to overseed this fall , what tools will I need for the tractor etc , etc . ..... Randy

Congrats on the Hay. A couple of things that I learned from an old farmer friend after I messed up my first batch of hay (mold in the bales). You may have already done this but just didn"t mention it.

1. use a hay tetter for a couple of days prior to bailing to flip over the hay and let it dry evenly.

2. Use a lot of Salt on the bales that are a little wet. This will help pull moisture from the bales.

what part of iowa are you guys from? i live east of cedar rapids got my hay up a few weeks ago 150 bales from 3.5 acres had my 70 year old mom running the baler(24t) with the 4430 been over 35 years since she drove a tractor hard to get her out of it she was intimidated at first but loved the nice ride and the air conditioning think i have found a driver from now on its a wonderful feeling to have hay in the barn for winter enjoy the smell of the fresh hay!!!!

good job Randy. I baled my 5 acres yesterday as well. Going to take a sick day next time. Didn't get done moving hay till 11:30 last night. With my H, I was running 3rd gear 3/4 throttle. Not sure of the total, yet have more to deliver today. My baler only broke the twine 3-4 times, couple times when I moved the bales. I also loosened my tension up, one crank. I think that is why my twine is breaking, to much preasure from all that hay in the bale. I figured out, you need to keep the windrow in the center of the pickup and you'll get pretty uniform bales. Some of mine looked good enough to be in a brochure for the baler!!!! Have a good one Randy

Way to go Rich !!! We did it ! Do you have the resistors in the bale chamber still ? The cheese grater looking things on the sides right behind the plunger ? Or the the little ramps at the end of the needle openings on the bottom ? Are your bale's to heavy like mine where ? If you said yes to the heavy part then remove them . I had removed the ramps to get the plunger out and never put them back in . The local Deere dealer 14T baler "pro" suggested to me a few weeks ago that if I didn't want 90LB bales to remove them both , the resistors and the ramps . I took 1/2 his advice and ended up with heavy bales . Something to experiment with next time .

I found that on mine it didn't seem to matter where I fed it , they came out straight . I made sure that my tensioners were adjusted the same side to side . I pushed it till I broke a shear bolt then I knew how much it would take . I raked most of the windrows up to about 2/3 of the width of the pickup if I had enough hay in that part of the field . I put 2 sometimes 3 windrows together in some other parts . 3 or 4 windrows ended up being barely a foot wide and 8" high . Those windrows made awesome looking bales ! Flat on the sides with about 25 flakes in them . I noticed one bale that only got 6 strokes before it tied . What an ugly bale . It must have been the one I broke the bolt on . I was baling at 2-1/2 to 3 mph on the " normal " sized rows .

I never checked the amount of tension it required to get the twine to the needles . When I threaded it I just pulled the twine at the same time , one in each hand and judged it to be at least equal . But on the first ones , same as your's the twine broke when I tried picking the bales up . Didn't really KNOW what caused it but backed the tension off 3 turns and didn't have another later bale break while moving them , BUT they were still heavy !

I can't imagine baling with a light tractor and a 14T . My tractor weighs over 10,000 lbs with fluid and that baler was rocking it like a hobby horse ! Take care and keep in touch ...Randy

Randy, I'm not sure if the resistors are still in the chamber or not, It's allways been full of hay. The bales aren't extremely heavy, but a couple felt like they were pure alfalfa. Probably around 60-70 pounds? Something else to mess with. The baler didn't rock my H as much as I thought it would last year when I borrowed my friend's familie's 14T. The H and the 14T work together pretty well, allthough the drawbar on my H has a lot of slop, fore and aft and side to side. That was causing a little drive train noise that I didn't care for. Where is the closest JD dealer around you, Greene?

Hi Rich , I have a lot of slop in the tongue of the baler and the hitch pin hole of the tractor so that could be the reason for me too . Don't you clean out the baler after ? You must have a shed . I don't , I have to keep my stuff tarped . I still need to get out there and clean the last bale out because it got wet during the last rain .

The closest dealer to me is in Waverly . The mechanic that rebuilt my Oliver works at the Greene dealership . He's GOOD ! Glad we all got at least some good hay in because it's rained here every night since Tuesday and is supposed to rain every night till ??? Take Care ....Randy

I don't clear out the chamber, I do run a couple straw bales thru it, enough to get the last full hay bale is out. I have to park mine outside too, until I sell my corn picker. I do my best to cover it as much as I can. I remember when I was a little sh%t, There was an Oliver/ White dealership there in Allison. Went out of business a few years back. My uncle farmed with Olivers and a Minni-Mo just north of Allison. Next Tues. is the first day there isn't a chance of rain down around my parts. Rich
