I have a 504 international about 54horse I belive. I need some ideas about what i can use for cutting grass hay. I have a sickle bar and this just dose not work in the thick grass. Want are some of the more popular Haybines that i could use with this tractor and what can I expect to spend on a used one? If anyone has something withing 100 miles of North Central Iowa and have something to sell shoot me a line!

thanks

Like most said, if it is in good condition, it should cut. The guards, sickle, and hold downs must be good if you want it to work. The only problem I have had with a sickle mower is mowing short grass going with the wind. The grass will gather on the bar an clog it.
I have run a 9 ft mower conditioner with a 45 hp tractor with no problem. I think the book on mine says 35 hp min.

I agree with the others...maybe just a new sickle in your mower would do the job..and probably one of your cheapest options. As far as bar mowers go, one that is belt driven will cut thru tougher stuff than an old pitman driven mower. If you need a mower conditioner, how much do you want to spend on one? I know of a used Hesston (not sure of model number) that is not being used and is for sale, but don't know if 54HP will pull it very fast. Personally, I am using a disc mower now. Someday might move up to a disc mower conditioner. Might be within a 100 miles of you, in south central Iowa.

Bill,
Now you are using a disc mower would you go back to a sickle?

Roy, It is doubtful that I'll ever use a sickle mower much any more, even tho I kept my NH 456 9 ft. mower when I bought the disc mower. Just keeping it as a backup, and maybe for mowing the lane(driveway). Bill

Bill,
Somehow I thought you would say that..it is not until you have actually used a disc or indeed a drum mower yourself that you realise what a PAIN the sickle mower really was, moreso in tangled laid thick crops, especially if it has any of that "woolly" undergrowth.

When we bought our disk mower we kept our IH 990 that was the back up to our 1190 that we also kept (it needs a fair amount of work) and it hasn't been used since. When we went to a disk mower mowing hay went from being a chore to something fun not to mention it cut our mowing time in half.

Bill, how's the weather over your way? I'm a few miles south of Fairfield and we had a pretty nasty storm go through this morning but I haven't seen any damage other than tree limbs and electricity being out in places.

I've seen them go at the sale barn in Floyd, Ia for 750-1000 depending upon condition. Not sure of the model numbers however cause I was never in the market for one. But at 400.00 per year to have another farmer cut my hay and on his time, Seems that it would pay for itself pretty quickly.

A good old sickle will cut any thing a new one does if its set up right. Sounds like you have old section on it or not timed right or bad guards

I'd hate to tell multi generations of old farmers that those sickle bars they used so effectively are no good. I cut thick grass hay with my three sickles and have no problems. You need to set the mower up right and you will see a big difference. Don't assume it is the equipment.
Learn how to use it.

Yep, I may be slow, but it took me almost 3 years to learn to get my old sicklebar working right...some of it was "tuning" it up, some was learning to adjust ground and PTO speed for different hay conditions. Now it is wonderful and I wouldn't trade it for any of the new noisy things!
