Hesston Round baler belt troubles

It had worn out belts when I bought it. I bought a couple from hesston and fixed the rest. Then after a few seasons I bought another 6 new ones.

Trouble is these 6 new ones seem to want to rip right at the lacing! Like after 30 bales I had one rip. So I thought it was a fluke so I replaced the lacing.

Then I never used it for a few years and it sat in the shed. Last fall I get it out to make some round bales and again another one of these new belts tears at the lacing. These belts are and look new still as they have done maybe a 100 bales in total.

After some investigating I found out they are 2ply belts and the 2 old hesston ones are 3 ply! The shop I bought them from claimed they are OEM belts and I could have bought better ones. I don't know much about these things so I just told them got give me what the baler came with.

Apparently Hesston switched to 3 ply belts as that what the 2 old replacement belts are I bought 10 years ago.

So now I'm shopping again for 6 new belts! As I don't want to have to fool around with brokend belts in the field. Seems like 3 ply belts (470" long) are $200 cdn. with the clipper lacing on them.

So I was wondering what is the way to go with baler belts? Is 2 ply a waste of time on a 5580 hesston?? Are 3 ply the only way to go on these things??

I asked the guy at the store and he says they have since switched suppliers. He says most don't buy 2 ply. He claims he does sell the odd 2 ply for old JD round balers and thats about it.

Not all baler belt construction is the same. Some manufacturers 2 ply baler belts are stronger that their 3 ply belts. It all has to do with belt construction. We sell hundreds of thousands of dollars of belting each year. We sell from 3 different baler belt OEM manufacturers. Some dealers try to sell conveyer belts as baler belts but that will not work. The conveyer belts will not last. Also if you do not have the proper size Clipper lacing to match your belts that also can be the problem.
