Well, I brought home my my newly aquired Kuhn disc mower yesterday. It"s well used, I"ll need a new tarp pretty soon(guess I"ll be calling ccm). I put new blades and bolts on it, one new skid shoe, tightened the belts, changed the oil in the cutterbar, PUT OIL IN THE GEAR BOX(unless there is another drain plug besides the one half way down on the inside of the gear box???), it was bone dry, and fired it up.

It ran decently, other than the blades on the outside 2 discs are rubbing the opposite(kinda loud), other than that, no problems. Any suggestions on the gear box oil or the blades rubbing the discs?? Could the discs themselves need to be changed?? Doesn"t really look that way, and at a $100 a pop(for the inside ones, didn"t price the ones with the drums on them), I hope it's not.

I"m probably going to go ahead and try to cut some with it the way it is. Any suggestions??? Thanks, Casey

Casey, In my unfortunate experience a dry gear box means a leak, probably the bottom seal. Check and see if the gearbox oil level goes down while the cutter bar oil level goes up. Check oil level after the mower sits over night. Different makers have different requirements for position of cutter bar to check oil. I have two models of the same make (Vicon) and one says to check with the cutter bar vertical and the other says to check with the end of the bar about 14 inches off the ground. So get a operators manual and follow durections. Oh, and check for other leaks. One of mine had the bolts that hold the gear box get loose and leak oil.

Good luck. Those disc mowers cut so much faster than sickle bars and the blades last much longer. I think I broke one blade several years of operation.
