Help about mowers for Farmall H

I'm using my granddad's '46 Farmall H with a 4' rotary mower. Problem is, the deck on the mower we got in the 50's is about rusted through, so it's getting dangerous. I'm looking to replace it, but don't know enough about this equipment to even know what to ask for. I've heard it called a rotary mower, brush hog, and other stuff, and I've been trying to find a used one on the web without success. It attaches to the tractor with a single mount that lets it turn side-to-side, plus the PTO connection, and everything I've seen uses this newer three-point mounting my tractor doesn't have.

Does anyone want to educate me on this? I'm kind of new to this, so I really need some help finding a mower that really works with this tractor. Of course, if you've got one you want to sell, let me know.

What you have is a pull type rotary mower. Brush hog is not the proper name even though that's what most people call them. The pull type rotary mower was very popular in the 50s and 60s, but have since all gone to the 3 point style. I don't know of any manufacturer making a pull type any more, except for really large units that would be too much for your H. Your best bet for finding one will be at farm machinery auctions. Your H will handle a 5 foot just fine, and depending on what you will be cutting, maybe even a 6 foot. Those mowers are out there, you just need to find them.

Ed, simplest solution for you is to look around for a pull type brush hog, just like what you have. You'll have to search a little harder, most are 3 point style but they are out there. More costly and complicated alternative is to retrofit your H with an aftermarket 3-point ($500+)Maybe someone else knows a new source for pull types?? HTH Ben

I know that kingcutter makes trailer type mowers. Never owner one though. Heard they are cheeply built.

I have a new 5 foot heavy duty King Kutter pull type rotary cutter for my H. It is ANYTHING but cheaply made. I compared it to the Bush Hog and Rhino brands and found it to be less costly and BETTER MADE. Don"t knock something till you have tried it. The King Kutters are available at Tractor Supply....I got mine for around $600 I think....but it works great, and it"s NEW!
Parts are readily available. The H handles the 5 footer with no problem whatsoever. GO for it!
