Which do you like and why ?

I think the wheel rakes leave alot of hay on the ground.

Basket does a better job for a clean field.

Here is a post that I did several years ago but the facts have not changed a bit.

Jerry,I agree with your statement except that the newer wheel rakes such as the H&S hi-capacity will rake with a rolla-bar.Mine doesn't boil hay out of windrow.I have raked 18 ft of hay making 5/1200# rolls/acre hay with no problems.Granted it will put more trash and DIRT in windrow but most of hay I bale is for cows.I like wheel rakes for simplicity.Tx Jim

I've used a wheel rake for 30 years. I like it because I can chain up all but 2 wheels and flip the windrow to get the night dampness on top. I have an old Grimm ground-drive tedder/fluffer that pins to a hitch on the back of the rake so I turn it and ted it in the same trip.

We used wheel rakes for years until we bought an IH 35 bar rake last year and this year we bought a JD 640 (I want to build a tandem rake hitch for them) and the bar rakes now do 90% of our raking. In our short alfalfa the wheel rakes leave too much in the field and we've used a V rake a few times but most of the time here you can't get hay dry enough to use a V rake unless you turn the hay once before using the V rake so the V rake really doesn't save that much time.

I've used a couple 12 wheel v rakes and really liked them. So much I'm looking to buy one this summer. I was surpised at how gentle they are on the hay. My second cut is a lot lighter so I used the V rake to put 3 9ft swaths together.

I have a standard old NH bar rake also and it works fine. But it typically only gets used to salvage a rained on crop etc.

You and us alike! we have a 9' haybine and we borrow our cousin's V-rake. always for 2nd/3rd crop, but the last 2 years we've used it for 1st crop also. Made our #12 baler throw those bales out extremely fast, and makes our 1855 Ollie and chopper work even harder. Next time we chop 1st crop we'll probably do double only.....

I'll be a little different - basket rake is the better general purpose rake.

Wheel rake can be bigger, faster, and cheaper.

Basket rake does corners & irregular fields better, the wind doesn't stop you from raking, handles big or wet crops better, and it is more of a finesee machine you can adjust to keep up with what you are doing.

they both have there place little patches are good for bar rakes, otherwise I wouldn't own a bar rake nowdays. I like the wheel rakes fluffier windrow and alot less shatter to me and they will really clean the ground if you want them too. As with any mechanical they both need to be set right to do you a nice job.

I have used a mounted V rake a (what we call it) butterfly type wheel rake and A H&S bifold rake. if any of them leave any hay on the ground it is because I just flat out missed it. In fact it will pick up leaves and trash that I can adjust my basket rake and skip over them. The simple approach of the wheel rake appeals to me. I like to use a basket rake if I need to turn a rained on windrow. I also prefer the fluffier windrow of a wheel rake than the somewhat twisted rope like windrow of a basket.

I have run a wheel rake for several yrs. I would not go back to basket type such as a Vermeer R23.I think a wheel rake does as go or better job of raking as basket type. I however mostly rake bermuda grass no ALFALFA. I have to install less teeth in wheel rakes.I use an H&S hi-capacity.I can adjust from raking 18ft.to 27ft. hydraulically from tractor. If need to go through gate I move hyd. lever and one can't do that with a Vermeer R23.Wind will also give problems with a basket rake but you can install wind gaurds on wheel rake if wind is a problem.Tx Jim
