For what it is worth heres my opinion. I have a wheel rake and an IH 16 bar rake. The wheel rake is good for corn stalks, but terrible on hay. My old IH 16 rake I bought for $600 out performs just about any rake I have seen when you compare shatter loss to speed.

Make sure which ever unit you get I would go with the wagon pull style not the pulltype stye that lookes like butteryfly folded up with two wheels. Also make sure you have independent side control so if you need to turn single you can. Have been assembling New Idea (same as Hesston)12wheel units and 10 wheel new Holland units. they all have adjust at rear to widen them out if you need to these won't plug like the butterfly style. Or the single inlines are fine choice too. I have all of the above available in new or used if that would help.

My Dad and I each had a Tonutti 8-wheel 3-point hitch model; they raked good, but were a major p-i-a to fold up in order to move down the road. The teeth have a finite life (what doesn't) and when you start breaking them, you might as well replace them all or buy another rake. Can't really remember how long the teeth lasted, but it was several thousand acres. When I wore the Tonutti out, I went to a Dura-bilt (10 wheel) hydro-fold on a 2-wheeled cart; hit the hydraulic lever and fold it up. Like it a lot better.

Re: v rake types in reply to fireman3, 06-05-2005 20:15:59
fireman, there are two types of wheel rakes. One type the rake wheels are behind the frame, so frame can restrict hay flow in heavy hay.The other type rake wheels are towards hay,no frame to restrict hay.I have this now and would not go back to other style because there is no comparison to finished windrow.I have a H&S high capacity that I think will rake with any brand.I have raked two 9 ft. cuts together in hay making 5/1200# rolls/acre.Tx Jim

I have a vermeer 10 wheel and love it. Only problem I"ve ran into is in really thick grass rolling 3 into 1 can plug it up. Or if i try to roll the grass too many times. Most of the problems are caused by me. In Bermuda or Tifton it sweeps very clean. Also a factor is that I"ve got the windrow choked down for a square baler.
