I have a chance to buy a NH 320 baler. I was wondering if this would be an improvement over my 275. What I mean by improvement is this a higher capacity baler? Also are they a model to stay away from? I really haven't had much trouble with my 275 but it is sort of small. I usually put up 6-7000 bales a year.

I've never been around a 275. I do have 2 NH278's and one NH320 which is a newer version of the 278 with a few improvements. The 320 is one of NH's high capactiy square baler's. Comparable to a NH575 of today in capacity etc except have a faster plunger speed of 105 strokes per minute at 540 pto rpm. Typically we run them slower at around the 95 spm range. They came with the heavy duty drive line and the 6 ball twine box.

We've run a NH 278 since 1975, added the 320 in the 80's and aother 278 in the late 90's. Good units for punching out the bales.

Like anything if it wasn't maintained it will need work. Easy thing to check is the feed rack and plunger for wear. Check the plastic rollers and the bearings in the feed rack. Give the rack and plunger a pull and see how much slop it has. I pull the racks and plungers out of my balers every winter and check them over etc. We rarely have any down time in haying season and I bet the one has over 750,000 bales through it!

If you have any questions just let me know.

Last fall I passed up a NH278 in mint condition at farm auction. I left it go for $1700, now I'm kicking myself. Even a 2K it was a good deal as it hadn't seen many bales and was stored inside its whole life.

320 was the big dog of NH 14x18 balers in its day. Feeder bar speed was too fast for its own good, apart from that, a good unit.
