Replacing roller chain

Have a very old Grimm crimper I'm replacing roller chain on. There is no tension adjustment on the crimper, so I can't lossen it.

Problem is I can't get the chain to meet so I can add the master link...chain is too short by maybe 1/16". If I add a half link, it is way too slack, but I just can't quite get it together without one.

So what's the secret?

thanks,
Tom A

Wound up baling yesterday before predicted thunderstorms today, so I didn't get to the crimper repairs, but my wife found me the chain tool for $8 at the TSC. So between the tool and heating the chain, I feel pretty confident I'll be able to get it together.

thanks for all the good advice!

Like Dave said, I find it easier to put it on by bringing the ends together on the sprocket. That way you can sometimes bring it together with a needlenose in the holes and pop the attachment link in the back side. Have used the tool in the shop and it works neat, but home I try secound best.

Are you trying to join it between the sprockets
or do you have it wrapped on the bigger sprocket to
join it on the sprocket

Heat the chain up some, I put one on the upper rack of my gas grill for a few minutes, grabbed it with some gloves and put it on.

Like you, on our baler a half link was to loose, but cold the chain was a tiny bit short.

Here's the tool you need, It inserts into the end links of the chain, and draws it together so you can insert the connector link.

Right you are, Bob; good set of snap-ring pliers will also work, the kind with "pins".

Thanks, I'll give heating it a try. It is that close where it might make a difference.

BK,

If you're gonna heat a new chain to put it on, I'd really make sure you get it oiled back up again after, because you're going to boil all the lube out of it.

Just tryin' to help,

Allan

I might add to count the number of links in the old chain when getting a new one. Never go by the length of the old one, as txgrn says, you'll be surprised how it has streched over the years. If needed, there is a "take-up"tool available which will enable you to make a tight connection.

Sounds like a common problem with old chains..... .....they stretch; and like on a round baler drive chain, you'd be surprised just how much.

Solution is a complete new chain....BTDT.

Old chain had broken and I wasn't sure all the links were there so rather than count links I just bought a big length of brand new chain and cut it to length.
