I need more input on baling

Thanks for the input given so far on my search for a baler. The small bale issue is related to the spouse. She wants smaller easier to handle bales that she can work with. You know, like the small 2 to 3 inch firewood that I call "wifey wood". Most of the bales will be straw for mulching and landscaping purposes. Since I have the straw, and small bales are not readily available, I guess I am getting a baler. For my 2 cents, if I am going to make small bales, I would like to get as much material into the bale so I don't make extra bales. Sounds like I am trying to defeat my wife's purpose for small bales, but she also has a preference for a smaller size.

From what I have read, there's alot to running a baler and making good bales. Is there any good source of information regarding the baling process, twine etc. I am looking at a NH 273 this weekend and I am assuming my Ollie 1855 will be more than enough to handle the small bales. Thanks for the help so far.

I am surprised you ain't got the sermon on get a manual. On the serious side if you go with the New Holland I think they do a good job and cover just about any problem you will run across, from operating to trouble shooting.

If it's just straw bales, they are really light if it's oat/wheat and probably soy also. We make 45-50 lb bales of hay, but in the oat straw they are about 25-30 lbs. The wifey should be able to handle them pretty easy. The one bad thing about running a baler w/ the 1855 is the engine has to be wound up to get the pto speed. We ran the baler with the 1755 once because it was there and we had already chopped most of the straw, we only needed about 50 bales to sell. You could run the engine a little slower and go a faster gear, just make sure not to feed too much in there or you'll be breaking shear pins.

As far as baleing, we may have to put that off for a little while. Our 1855 is sick so we're wondering how we can run the chopper tomorrow. How's about sending one of your's over? ;-)

I don't know about that last idea. The canning company just called and said our 150 acres of sweet corn is going in next week. Let's see, of the 4 1855's, one is out with a bad engine, one on the corn planter, one on the sprayer and one on the leveling disk. Sorry!

Seems like we've got the same problems!! Our 17's still sitting with a blown engine, and the 285 massey can't run a 1000 rpm chopper. Not unless we invest quite a good penny on trying to find the 1000 rpm output shaft which is hard to come by, and then the 1855 would still have more power. I lost turbo boost through a hole in the little elbow between the manifold and the turbo about the size of a sharpie marker gonna have to do a lot of praying & hopeing we can get the desperately needed rain to hold out long enough to get the grassy hay in the silo, provided the 18 is fixed in time. Otherwise we're going to have to bale it instead....

Don't really understand the concept; you want to make small bales, but put as much material as possible into each one? Is that a conundrum? You can set the length of each bale; as short as one charge (theoretically)i.e. 4-6 inches or as long as 6 or 7 ft (which you can't handle, because it will fold up). Not familiar with the NH baler you're looking at, but locally John Deere and NH have been considered the way to go.

If she's just using it for landscaping and mulching how much could she use? Why bale it at all? You could just cut and put it in haystacks or store it in a shed or ...

It doesn't seem sensible to bale straw just to 'unbale' it for a small amount of mulch.
