Sudan Hay Question NH-411

Am trying to get my hay custom baled. They usually use a mower/conditioner with sickle bar and rollers to condition. If you just use a mower or disk mower the sudan won't cure very good. A man has a NH 654 round baler and a NH 411 Disc Mower/Conditioner, which he has never used it for sudan. Question: Will it break the stems for conditioning and curing the hay, like the sickle type mower/conditioners?? Thanks for your help. Tom

Tom,my observation of cutting sudan with a sickle vs disc mo-co is either one will do a good job but the regrowth of sudan will not be as good when cut with disc because disc tends to shatter stalks causing stand to be thinner.I prefer sickle to cut sudan but disc will work.Jim

If it is a disc mower/conditioner and not just a disc mower then yes. I didn't look up the particular model you gave for the mower. It should have the rollers like the sickle type or have a shaft with those swinging little blade things in there. Forget what they're called. What you're after is something to crush/chaf those stems so moisture can get out without having to travel the length of the stem.
Most of the guys in my area (Southwest Houston) have gotten away from the sickle type mower conditioners (called haybines down here) and have gone to those disc types (called discbines down here).

The 411's I've seen have the 'tractor-tire' meshing rubber rolls. They do not have the impeller (little blades) which is a rare thing here in alfalfa country.
