I`ve got a low 12 ft. trailer I`m putting a 12 volt winch on . The main reson is to drag big corner fence post on it as my want to is still there but the back dont want to !! would you all put a battery on the trailer with some cables run to the truck/tractor battery to keep it charged or just run off of the truck/tractor battery ?

I have a Warn 8000# single line pull winch on my 24 foot gooseneck and what I did was wire a heavy 30 foot set of jumper cables directly to the winch and made a place for the cord to wrap up and be hooked on the trailer. When you want to use the winch just pop the hood on the truck and clamp on to the trucks battery and away you go. It works good for me having several trucks that can pull the trailers and if the neighbor wants to use the trailer and winch it will work, no battery to go down, no special hookups, you just pop the hood on the pulling truck and hook up and go.

Works good for me, just a thought.

The extra-long jumper cables sound like a good idea. You just never know when they might come in handy for other reasons. Never know when something might need a jump in a hard to access location.

I think the winch will be much more efficient if you install a battery for the winch on the trailer. Run a heavy cable from the battery on your truck into the wiring harness to keep the winch battery charged.

Either way is fine. If DOT requires break-away brakes (energized with it's own battery) on your trailer, might want to set it up on the trailer with a bigger battery, but cheaper perhaps to just use the vehicle battery.

If you have a modern pickup, I would spend the money to isolate things a bit - a good camper plug setup as mentioned - those dern computers are fussy & cost $500 or so to replace, leaves you sitting when they fry from spikes & such....

It would work either way, but I would use the battery on your truck/tractor. Camper places sell the auxilary posts for things like this.
