hay rake slipping

Something is slipping on my IH 14 hay rake causing the wheels to not turn and I can't figure out why. Even with no load on it it will turn then slow down and then start turning again. When I try to rake any hay at all it stops turning completely sometimes. In any event its doing a lousy job. Any ideas what I should be looking for?

Just guessing here since I don't know that rake, or at least I don't think I do but I may have one, nor sure which IH I have. I'd check the baerings at the wheels, if it has a chain I'd remove the chain and see if the wheels will turn then. If they do you have a problem in the gears box or at the rake wheels, if they don't you have problems in the wheels bearings. How well lubed do you keep it?? $0.50 worth of grease will save $500 in repairs.

there is a pawl that engages both wheels (needed to pull the rake with hay in it) that will hang sometimes..

on our JD rakes its been inside a drum on one of the wheels... it gets stuck during the winter sometimes...
and will cause the same simptoms you have.
