NH 256 rake question

I recently purchased a NH 256 rake and have been using it for the first time. Overall it seems to work well but I do hear a popping or knocking noise sometimes when the basket drags the ground going over a terrace, high center, etc. The noise is coming from the gear box. Is this something I should be worried about or is this some sort of clutch mechanism inside the gearbox which slips when necessary to avoid breakage?

I would start simple first by making sure that all racheting mechanisms are good in the wheels and the shear pins are all good in the yolks. After that, make sure that the square shafts and inserts aren't so worn that they slip inside eachother. These shafts should have some slop, but not enough to where they can turn inside eachother. After that, check the bars for cracks and make sure they are all on tight and the not wobble in the bars. After that, I would make sure the gearbox doesn't have any bad gears. You could also be hearing the teeth just spring when they hit something. Also, make sure that your springs are good on the lift too, it could be that bouncing and making noise when you hit a bump or something? Hard to tell. Our 256 has a wheel bearing that is about shot and it makes a smacking noise when going over bumps, so go around and push on each wheel and make sure the bearings aren't shot in any of them. Hard to diagnose the problem without seeing it and using it. Good luck

I have had a couple that the pto shaft between the rake basket and gear box becomes wore so badley it will slip and make noise

These rakes are so quiet that when the tractor is running you don't even know their back there.
Sounds like you have a gearbox problem, possibly a busted tooth on a gear? I would guess quite spendy to fix. If it still rakes I would just check the gearbox to see that it has grease in it and keep on rolling. Other opinions?

When turning, each wheel on my 55 Assuming a 256 is the same) has a dog that 'knicks' as one wheel goes slower than the other on the corners. If that is the popping sound, would be quite normal. Coming from the gearbox itself, that would be a cause for concern....
