flat rack lumber

I am putting down a new deck on this wagon I just picked up.I plan to use 4x4,s for cross beams and screw down 1x6 rough cut oak to top it.I am not
sure if this needs to be kiln dried,or will it
be o.k. if I get it all bolted and screwed down
right away ? Thanks for you're

We used 6x8s for runners 3 of them and then laid 2x12 cotton wood planks across them 10 years wagons still handle 120 bales no problems

As kyhayman said, I would not use the 4x4 cross pieces. If the planks are running front to back (like they would on the 4x4s), the surface is more slippery making it harder to build the load and harder on you. Best to put the planks crossways with a one inch board down each side.

I always prefer green lumber, when it drys it clamps down on the fastners. Personally, I prefer to use 1-1/2" thick boards, 8' long and put them right on the runners omitting the 4x4's.

I built a wagon on an old truck frame and used 4x4s. I used 5/4 pine for the deck because that's what I had, but when I had to replace it I used pressure-treated 2x8s. I left a 3/4" space between them because part of the reason the pine didn't last was because of chaff buildup holding the moisture. I only use it for bales and wood.

Green lumber WILL shrink, mostly sideways. 4x4 cross pieces might not be strong enough, depends on the frame width and how often they are placed.
