this baler was bought new and has baled about 2500 bales, it has been serviced and kept inside, pressure washed after a couple of days use and put up clean for the winter.the knock sounds like it"s comming from the top. the bearings don"t seem to be hot and the knock comes and goes. how many bales should you expect before any major problems. thanks, mike1111

The "knock" is caused by the hex bore of the bearing and the hex shaft, on locations that the shaft turns. Sometimes you can use quick metal between them and stop the knock, but it is not necessary. It will not cause the bearing to fail.

I agree with the later post about NOT using high pressure water or even a garden hose on the bearings. Worst thing that was ever invented for bearing failures. Use air to blow off the debris or hose off the areas not by bearings.

The knock can come and go.

By all means attach a water type fire extinguisher. Read the operators manual for other recommendations concerning fire.

Mine says eject the bale immediately, get the tractor and baler headed into the wind, away from the bale, and start squirting.

Our 567 Deere baler does the same thing, sometimes you can really hear it knock and other times it runs smooth. Sounds like it is coming out of the front top of the baler.

JD guys say that is normal and so far it is doing really well. I think that is just the way these balers sound.

Mike, when I worked for a Deere dealer 430/530 were being sold. They would knock like that after baling some hay.JD reps. said it was caused from hex-bore brgs.rocking on hex shafts.Noise would come and go.If I were operating any color rd. baler I would check brgs.frequently for heat, carry a fire extinguisher and INSURANCE.Even with fire extinguisher a rd.baler can get crisp very fast as I had one burn several yrs.back.Tx Jim

Say Jim,

Hex bore bearings rocking on hex bore shafts shouldn't affect the ball or roller part of the bearing should it? I mean farm equip is full of round, square and hex things mating and driving the balls (in the bearing) to rolling.

Now with respect to the problem Mike mentioned, maybe they got too frisky with the power washer and got water inside the roller area.

I don't go for that. I put mine up dirty or maybe hose it out with compressed air, but no water.....just my perogative....don't want to chance getting water in sealed (Ha) bearings.

And yes on the fire ext. I just made a bracket for my (New to me) 530 and mounted a sprayer to the front just in case.....right where the OEM goes, but for about $20.

I started looking on the tractor but with a soundguard cab, there just wasn't any place to put it that either wasn't in the way or detracted from this beautiful restoration.....so off to the baler it went. If maw deere put it there I guess I can too.....hope I never need it.

I had a 550 that used to do exactly that, a knocking sound that came from near the top of the machine that would 'come and go' just as you described. Then all at once it stopped and never did it again. Totally baffling! It never caused any trouble though. I even wondered if it was a little stone or something getting trapped now and again in one of the rollers. To this day I still would like to know the answer!
