I have a NH 640 round baler and would like to make a set of gathering wheels for it. Anyone out there ever made thier own, or maybe have some close-up pics of one so I can get an idea of what I'm doing? And, part 2 of my question..... all the ones I've seen in pictures of balers are rubber, would a set of the circular rake wheels work instead? Any advice welcome. Ron

You might buy some of the replacement wheels for a wheel type lawn rake. They are $40 for the 18 inch size which are the right size. I've been thinking of doing the same thing.

I bought the kit from NH for my 650. A shade under $800. Used it one time and decided I would have bought it if it was $1800. Makes the bales so much better, fills in the edges perfectly.

If you would happen to have a picture or diagram of them, I would really appreciate it. I really want to do this, but I can make that $800 go a lot further with the do it yourself approach. My budget is really stretched for this year already! My address is "Stoneoak at direcway dot com", if any body has anything that might help me out here, maybe I can stretch into another project!

Hi, gathering wheels seem to be mostly rubber nowadays, and replacements are very expensive indeed, just priced up some for an mf822 and decided i could manage without!!!! I also have a mf 1455 and the gatherers on that are just single metal spring tines, mounted on a round hub, i will take and post a piccy tommorow for you! take care AJ

I would REALLY appreciate that! I'm thinking that if I can use the round wire wheels, I can pick them up at Atwoods pretty reasonable. I'm pretty handy at making things, so if I can get some idea of how they are mounted and angled, I should be able to make the mounting brackets and maybe use a small car front spindle and hub to bolt them to. What do you think?
