I am planning to buy a box blade for my trator. I see 2 types for sale, hinged back and nonhinged. Is the hinged back better? Can the hinge be pinned shut? What would you buy? Easy.

I have both hinged and non-hinged (fixed) box blades. I prefer the hinged style because it cuts better. The non-hinged style works better with the top link lengthened and can put a little down pressure on the dirt as you scrape, NOT DIG while moving forward.

Here's my summary:

Hinged: 1. better for heavy cutting in dirt, easier to get a full box of dirt
2. works as well in reverse direction as fixed BB.

Non-hinged:
1. dirt tends to get balled up between the front and the rear cutting blades.
2. more difficult to get a full box of dirt
