I have a model 32 MF sickle bar mower, its a three point job. Is it safe on the componets to lift is via tractor hydraulics (3 point) when the blade is on the ground. Just spent about 200 bucks in parts to get it going again.

One guy told me when you lift the mower high off the ground you should have it in the up position. Any thoughts??

Little OT but still MF 32 mower in reply to kasparj, 05-28-2005 18:24:06
Has anyone priced a new pitman for one of these old mowers from a dealer? Priced it at 3 different dealers and the price was close to the same. I just bough a MF32 that was complete except missing the complete pitman. No wonder I got such a "good deal". Anyone have a spare to sell?

One thing you need to keep an eye on is the pto shaft binding if you pick it up all the way. This depends on what tractor the mower is on. We have an MF 31 here that will bind on the Ford Jubilee if lifted more than 3/4 up, but when on my cousin"s MF 135, it won"t bind at all. Has to do with very small differences in hitch dimensions relative to pto shaft on the tractor.

Sure you can, that's how you get over/around obstacles! I wouldn't race around that way (the end tends to bounce) but if you take care you will be just fine.

Have you tried your 32 yet? I have one that's a few parts away from being ready to go. We had a Fast Hitch mower at the farm for years so I'm kid of curious how they compare.

I do it all the time without any problems. The bar may tend to whip if your ground is bumpy, though. The only time I have it in the up position is when I'm travelling to or from the field.

All of the mounted mowers I have seen can be safely raised with the cutter bar down.

I ran a #42 for several years (until we got a vicon disk mower)

only raised it when it got plugged---and when needing to trim mom's headge or such

the whipping bar can bend the knife but its not going to happen if your careful and dont raise it a lot
