Round balers ?

I am hoping to get some feedback on finding a good model of round baler . I am looking to spend somewhere in the 6 thousand $ range . There are so many different models and # out there . I have a IH504 and do approx 30 acres per cutting . I would like to find a bale model that starts easily on grass/alfalfa mix hay and that has hyd tensioning . Anyone who has owned a baler model that they would recommend I would be thankfull for a reply . Tom

The IH 504 will not handle most round balers. My Vermeer 504G (4x5) needs a minimum of 52 hp. That's on flat ground. The IH504 was 46 hp when new. There are some smaller balers available that make 4X4 bales that it will run.

I am currently selling a Hesston 5580 (cause I just got the JD 530) which will tie a 2000" 5x6 if you keep the roller rolling...You can stop anytime you want on a smaller diameter. Since it is a manual tie machine, tieing smaller bales is not a problem.

I pulled it with a 4010 JD which is 70ish PTO hp. The tractor loafed for most of the roll till I got over 5' (x5') diameter whereupon you could hear the engine starting to load up and the governor kicking in. By the time it hit the limit of 6' the tractor was working pretty good. Wouldn't want to bale full bale with less.

Actually the 4010 is 81 hp per the book. I agree, You can do diameter smaller bales and use a smaller tractor. However with a tight core baler it takes a little umph to get them started also. The 5 ft bales take more hp than the 4 ft also. I use a 94hp tractor and running a 4X5 bale going up a hill will make it work some, although I have plenty of reserve.

My reccomendation would be to buy a Vermeer. They are great machines and are usually a little cheaper than JD or NH. Get an F series or newer, and you should have no trouble finding a nice one in your price range. That said, the JD dealer near me does have a very clean 530 baler, and they are asking $6500. I toyed with buying it myself for a second baler.

I just bought a 530 in excellent shape for $5k. Thought I stole it. Have wanted one for years.
Now to learn how to use it.

530 was the baler of choice around here for years cause of the bale quality and reliability. Had a few Vermeers and owners liked them.

Now the big boys have moved up to the 560 series, like the 566.....but that's ok.
