Rye is often used here by highway departments as a cover crop for the alfalfa, clover, grass seed sown with it. It is an annual, but easily reaches 4-5 feet here. It is not a grass seed- it dies out after the first year, but does produce harvestable kernels for feed. If harvested as seed, it makes a nice crop to plant when laying by corn, for those that do not want to use herbicides. Grows up in mid-summer and stifles weeds. Archie could have convinced Edith that it was as good as oatmeal! Makes a good plowdown.
