How long after applying manure with straw in it can you bale hay without picking up any manure/straw in your bales?

Theres a few factors. First how well did it spread. Finer pieces are less of a problem, larger pieces take longer to break down. If it rains a lot on it that'll wash any of it off the hay and beat it into the dirt better. If it's sunny out it'll take longer. Basically if you can walk the field and don't see any of it more than 3" off the ground you should be okay.

It helps to drag it in w/ a spike tooth drag, but that is only good up to a certain point, by now it's way too late for that. You'll knock it down. If you haul right after cutting, let it dry down for a couple days then drag it. It'll break up all the clumps.

Wow... a lot of variables in that question. Did u spread it last fall or this spring? How good was the spreading job? Big piles?? Are u planning on cutting the hay with a sickle mower and rake it or cut with a haybine?? Are you selling the hay or feeding it? My cows wouldn't care..... .. :)

A year!
Really, I don't see how you can mow, ted rake and bale that without getting most of it in your hay. I've made hay for almost thirty years and you always get some thatch from last falls growth in the first cutting, so you're sure to pick up most of that manure. Big dairy farmers here in NY spray manure on hay in the spring and after each cutting but it's liquid and no straw. The rain washes it of the grass into the soil.
