Sounds like you could have a model "M" drill. They were available both the high steel wheels as well as the low rubber tire wheels. There was 2 types of feeder cups, one had the "cone" drive where you set the rates by sliding the gear up or down the large cone gear. The other type had a "dial" or dials on the rear of the hopper to adjust the rates. You would put the oats or other large seeds in the large hopper and small seeds such as alfalfa, clover, etc. in the grass seed hopper. These will seed at the same time. For seeding rates on the large hopper with the cone drive there should be a chart under the lid, otherwise the dials on the large hopper and the grass seed hopper have the rates on the dials. Good luck!

The grass seed and oat boxes should be independent for settings and for operation. They can generally be run together. I prefer to put small seed out on top the ground so it doesn't get buried too deep so I unhook the grass seed tubes from the oat tubes.

I posted a technique for calibrating drills 21 days ago. http://www.ytmag.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=implment&th=88270

It will work for any drill or planter providing you have a sensitive scale or can be satisfied with a seed count.

I used your method years ago and would think it still works. Only thing I did different was to put a tarp under all the seeds tubes to catch the seed. Takes a bit of time but worked great for me. Make notes for next time.
