JD 1240 Planter questions

I just brought a john deere model 1240, four row (30") planter. I dont have a book on it yet, but wanted to plant sweet corn right away. Ive greased it all up and it seems it is ready to plant.

Can anyone help me on how to check to see if it is ready?

I have B24 plates.

I would put some seed in it and try planting about 50 feet in the drive way. That way you can see how the seed is dropping. I like to use round plates on sweet corn. I can't remember but it seems I used a B-2 plate. Also make sure your fertilizer augers are in the right way. I've loaded my fertilizer hoppers up only to find that I had the augers in the wrong hoppers. Needless to say after scooping out the fertilizer you soon learn to pay attention to that. The augers turn toward the tractor and should move the fertilizer from the center of the hopper toward the outside. Other than that I think you are probably ready to go. I plant at 3-5 mph.

I just got back from trying out your suggestion. Hmmm. Not so good. I was using rectangular hole plates. I only got about 8 kernels to drop in 50'. So then I checked and only them small kernels apparently dropped, the big ones were left.

The seed corn package says to use B0-24 plates, which is I believe an oval plate???? I checked with the tractor salvage yard and they didnt have any B0-24's. So I'll buy some from LincolnAg tomorrow.

obtw, I checked the fertilizer augers, too and thankfully, they are turning the right direction.

Especially thanks for the planting speed, I had NO idea on how fast to go. Guess I'll have to get an operators manual!
