Galen, The implement you described I what I have always known as a "Lister Planter"
Makes a furrow and plants in the bottom of the furrow in one pass. I used a 6 row JD lister planter in the panhandles of TX/Ok planting dryland Milo.. Just as Allan said, plant in the bottom, so the furrow catches what little rain we got and it was right there at the root zone where the little plants needed it most.
A Lister just makes rows. A lister will have one more bottom than the planter you are useing. ie-a 6-row planter will require a 7 bottom lister. This is so you can plant on 6 matched tops.
A planter, persay just plants, doesn't make rows.
IE, Like Allans new planter, It is designed to plant on the row tops or on flat ground. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Hi Galen,

Rainin' down there this morning? :>)

A lister builds a "furrow" and drops the seed into the lower 'ditch' so that the plant will have a chance to grab some moisture from any subsequent rains.

They used to be used on dryland corn back in the old days.

Allan

Rainin' so hard I can count the drops! MIGHT get some this afternoon....
I remember Dad had a 4 row lister with "hoods" on the back. I found a 290 JD at an auction ($7), and planted some sweet corn, never did really know the difference!
When's movin' day?
