Hi again Rich , I just now had time to read your post from Sunday about testing your sickle and loosening guard bolts . Try getting some deformed nuts . They are a grade 8 so they don't rust up as bad as those nyloc nuts do . Sometimes called stover lock nuts . You can get them at fastenal or your local well stocked hardware store , but they aren't cheap , about a dime more each than the nylocs . But you can only use nylocs once safely . A deformed nut till theres nothing left of your sickle . ( A long time ) ...Randy

Hi there Randy, are you talking about thenuts that deform the threads as they are tightened on the bolt? I thought about them, but figured if I ever had to take the bar apart, I'd have to get new bolts. There are only 14 bolts I'd have to replace, so it wouldn't be to bad. When I finished playing with the mower, the hold downs were staying tight, I think they had to wear just a bit so I could tighten them. I'll probably buy some of those longer bolts and lock nuts and have them on hand when I really start cutting. Still haven't found the missing rock guard...

Hi Rich , I don't think the ones I'm talking about hurt the threads at all . I use them on my rake teeth . If you look at them from the side they can only be put one one way like the nylocs . The hardware store I get them from is True Value and they are simply called a all metal locknut . Oliver parts book calls them "stover" lock nuts . What size are they ? I've got a Fastenal book around here somewhere . If I can find it ( read -If my wife didn't toss it ) I can see if they carry them in the size you need if you are interested . ....Randy
