Has anyone had any troubles with a john deere 850 series rake popping out of gear alot. I can rake for about 50 feet and the gearbox will pop out and I will have to stop and push the lever back down. It seems to have a catch or something on it and as I hit bumps it might pop up and catch on a bur or something. Was wondering if anyone has ran into this. Thanks in advance.

Jon,
My brother has a 858A rake that I use and it was doing the same thing. I took the drive apart and the dogs were worn at an angle rather than being straight like they should be. It is a rather extensive job to take this totally apart and I priced the gear from Deere and it was really expensive. So I just took the old arc welder and built up the worn dogs while the part was still on the rake. Works fine now. Good Luck.

Thanks for the info but forgive me for being stupid. What are the dogs. I am not real familiar with hay rakes.

Jon,
The dogs are the actual teeth on the gear. Using the welder, you build up the missing metal on the teeth so they will engage the cog (other gear)
