I just got an oliver sickle bar mower and noticed that the drive from the mower isn't like the the drive spline from my tractor's pto. The drive shaft for the mower is one inch square. Anybody have any suggestions on how to adapt a standard pto drive shaft to this configeration?
Thanks

Hi , Another suggestion would be to find a tractor bone yard ( salvage ) and see if they have any good ones . Be picky . It's got to fit tight yet still slip . Then clean it and grease it before assembling it . Have fun ! ...Randy

your missing a piece. there should be a second shaft, one end has the 1" square that goes to your existing shaft then the other end will have the 540 that goes to your tractor. any farm supply store will have the other shaft. what model mower is it? i have a 415 myself.

Thanks for the reply re: oliver sickle mower. I'm putting together a drive shaft using you8r suggestion. I don't know the model number, is there a model plate located anywhere on the mower that would give me that info? I have another question. What do i use to lower and raise the blade? There is a linkage with nothing attached to it on one end and the other end looks like it links to an armature that connects to a heavy spring, thaat connects to another linkage that looks like it would control the raising and lowering of the blade. Do I need a pitman arm to control this linkage? Do you know anyone that might have one or where I might pick one up?
Thanks
Frank

Now, don't take this wrong, since I don't know how much you know about implements, or anything, but...

Are you certain that you have the entire PTO shaft? There should be a square-tubed "socket" piece connected to the mower, with a square bar shaft inserted into it. At the (tractor) end of the square bar shaft should be a U-joint with the coupler attached. If this coupler is square drive, you can get a new end at a farm supply store (like Tractor Supply). If the entire square bar shaft is missing... you can still find them at someplace like TSC... but they ain't cheap (I just spent almost $100 on one)
