disc terminology

I need to know what i"m talking about here and need some help. Looking to buy a disc (7 or 8 ft) to pull behind my Farmall H. I hear and see the word gang used in referring to disc"s. 2 gang/1 gang for example. Is the gang the disc from one side to the other. or are the set of disc that turn together a gang. Hard to explain i guess. I"m looking for a disc that has 1 row behind the other and each row a partial v shape. Is this a 2 or 4 gang disc? Thanks Mike

Around "here", this is a tandem disk (harrow); a gang is all the blades that are on one axle; never heard the term used as such, but this would be a 4-gang disk.

How did that rig get out in that dirt with no dirt on the blades & none on the transport wheels?? That is a big disc by my standards. Pic just struck me as odd and peaked my curiosity.

That looks like some red clay soil around Alabama and Georgia. All I got here in FL is sand and blue clay.

I'm probably wrong (seems like I am, most of the time), but...

The implement that you are describing is what I would call a 2 gang disc.

Just to add some confusion, down here in Texas, it would be called a disc harrow (or even just a harrow, which vastly compounded my confusion, since I grew up in Illinois and I would've call the danged thing a disc!!)

a gang is the disks that turn together as a unit. It sounds like your explaining an off set disk which has a single row in the front and a single row in the back that are set opposite one another. it would have to be a darn small off set disk to pull with an H, as off set disks is very hard to pull. don't use width measurment as a guage of size. go by the size and the number of disk blades you'll be pulling thru thr ground

I think he mentioned a 'v' shape, so that would be a tandem, 4 gang finishing disc, not a heavier tillage off-set disk as you are describing?

You are wanting what is usually called a tandem disc,it has a right and left front set of gangs and a rear right and left set of gangs. On most all of this type you can adjust the angles of cut. The more the angle the more aggressive the cut. You will also find the blades on the gangs will be at different spacings. 6 inch 9inch etc

Well, im not all that great with implement yet either so my guess is just as good as yours but to me it sounds like you are explaining a 4 gang disc.
