Recently a buddy of mine was at an aution. He knew i was looking for either a 2 bottom hydraulic plow for the Farmall H or a 3 bottom trip plow for the massey harris 44. Well...he bought me a JD 55 A-B-H wich is a 3 bottom hydraulic plow. First im going to ask were do you buy parts for this plow? I know it needs a hydraulic cylinder, tires, and im sure as i get into it more i will discover it needs more. Next question is were can i get a hydrualic set up for a massey harris 44 standard? Can a pto driven pump be purchased just to mount on the rear pto shield? How does that work? Were would a resivoir go? How do you control it up and down then? Thanks to anyone who can answer any of the question. I am just getting into this hobby and my first plow days 2 weeks ago were i borrowed a plow really got me hooked.

Your best bet for Hyd. power on your 44 is to get the complete live power system from a junkyard. The reservoir mounts behind the grill in front of the radiator. The control mounts to the deck under the seat. The pump mounts on the left side of the engine right under the oil fill pipe.

Yep, get the tank and pump off another 44 (check Ebay)may need the tank bracket also and mount a control on the trans deck. Plumb the thing and ready to go.

JD 55A and 55B were not hydraulic plows and had two levers. JD 55H is a hydraulic plow with one lever. JD is one of the best companies for older parts but this might be reaching a little. I use a 55H and get my parts at auctions or other plows.
The parts you say you need are available elsewhere. Tires in the manual are recommended as used car tires. Any 8" two way cylinder should be fine. I got mine at TSC. JD can sell you a manual or you can buy it on ebay.

Dave, You are nearly correct, the 55H did have one lever IF it was built after 1948, the earlier ones had a crank for leveling and no lever.

This one says 55 ABH on the frame. What does this mean? Is the ABH a model or was there just the 55 A 55 B and a 55 H?

Yep, there were 55 A, 44 B and 55H plows, but they all had the same 55 A B H decal on them.

sorry, had a typo in that....meant to say: 55 A, 55B and 55H. Although, they did have the same sequence in the 2 bottom 44 series too.

Kevin, given that you will have to go by the differences in the plows. The H had a bracket to mount the cylinder and only one adjusting arm. The other two I am not too familiar with although I do have a manual. Ground driven clutch arrangement for raising and lowering I believe but not sure. Here's hoping you have an H and can use a cylinder. :-)

I do believe it is a H. It only has one lever and what apears to be a hydraulic cylinder mount. It also has anoter rod bracketed on that doesnt conect to anything right now. It is right up by the lever but on the other side closest to the hydraulic cylinder mount.

Most likely the rod is for holding up the cylinder hoses but I can't be sure from the description.

This rod is pretty long. I dont know how to describe it beside its...well...a rod...alittle shorter than the length of the plow frame.

On my 55H there are only three things that I would call rods. The aforetomentioned hydraulic support rod is one. There is a rod which starts behind the cylinder bracket and passes thru a spring ending at the tail wheel assembly which is the rear lift rod. There is a small two part rod that is attached to the leveling arm that releases the arm. That is the extent of rods on the 55H plow to the best of my knowledge.

Better post a new thread for your next question. This one is about to go to page 2 and I won't read down that far. You MUST have an operators manual if you plan to use the plow. I won't advocate someone using dangerous equipment without proper knowledge. It covers set-up and hitches for tractor. There are two different hitches in the catalog. Parts catalogs are fine if parts are available. Don't know if one is still available. Could also be handy for disassembly for painting.
