The bale chamber sides are wearing thin right above the bottom roller on my baler. Would it work to cut some 1/8" plate and bolt in there to extend the life of it? Ther are 3 existing bolt hole there that could be used. Thanks.

I recently plated the inside of my JD 435 with 10 gauge sheet steel. I started with a piece that was 12 in wide by 72 in long. I had a 1.75 in lip bent into it. I then cut the corner out of the inside of the chamber (where it meets the gate) and ground the welds. I then clamped my plate in position so the lip was flush where the gate closes and overlapped on the inside of the chamber. I then welded the inside solid and used a grinder to bevel the welds. Make sure you check the outside of the baler and move any wires or hydraulic lines that catch on fire when you weld...check both sides because they are probably different. Used a space blanket to cover and protect the belts. If you have your materials prepped it should be a short afternoon job.

Seemed to work like a champ!

I armored up an 847 that I used to have 3 different times (floor 3 times and the sides also 2). Used 1/4" plate. Its still running for my neighbor so must have held up.

How much of the area did you do? I was going to do up to the wedge for the chain, that would get the worst worn area. Did you bolt or weld yours in? I was going to use carriage bolts.

I tried to cover all the worn area plus a little. Sides about an 8" by 6" patch, floor was a lot worse pretty much all of it the second time, maybe 4-5 8"x8" patches. All welded.
