I'm thinking about buying a Ford 14-71 square baler . It has a Wisconsin 2 cylinder engine and is in kinda rough shape. It may be missing some parts. I've had NO luck surfing internet for ANY info on this old baler. I like a challenge, but is this an impossible project? I can't even find a manual of any type. HELP!! any info at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Brad Rockwell

I have plenty of ford 250 baler parts for cheap if in fact you need some. I'm out in washington so shipping might hurt. My ford baler project has been on the shelf for a while; good luck.

Howdy Cab. Thats great to know! Do you by any chance have a manual? Until I can find a book or pictures or someone to sell me copies, I don't really know what all I need. I know I need drive belts or at least correct size info. I suppose extra needles and knotter parts would always be good to have. The clutch on the flywheel is shot also. I havent had time to clean off the leaves and other debris to get a good look. the chains are shot also. Thanks & I'm looking forward to buying somethings from you! Brad Rockwell

They are a nice little balers. However, You will need to really "love" a challenge to get a red ford baler not in working order. Bearings and such can be crossed, welded assymbles can be made (if needed), but cast items are not going to be easy to get. Very pricey if you do find NOS. I have 2 I4-80's and manuanls for them. Part wise, for the most part, you will be looking at parts machines or a really old ford man who has a memory like an elephant and could cross it up.

Good news is, looking up stuff is easy if you use "Ford model 250, series 504". The
I4-71 (54-63, 250/504 - electric start), I4-76 (55-62, 250/504 - rope start), I4-80 (55-63, 250/504 - PTO),
are all twine balers and the same base baler, Kinda.... There was a manufacturer change early in the production and a 1955 and 1958 are quite different machines, however they carry the same model numbers and look close to the same.

Somewhere I had a reference that gave s/n vs years but not sure where it is now. If you do end up with it ebay is a good place to start looking for parts and pieces. They tend to pop up every few months. Manuals every few weeks.

Good Luck

Hello Errin. Thanks for the help! I do have the belt guides you mention. I'd be willing to pay a good price for copies of any manuals or any paper work, or even one of the two manuals you have. If you might be so inclined? thanks again, Brad

Thanks for the info guys! I found the baler on Ebay. There were no bids & when I found out it was 30 miles down the road, I went to look it over.Paid two hundred & towed it home.A looooong 30 mile ride! Probably spent too much. To me, the engine added a little to the value and alot to the cool factor. At the very least, a nice yard ornament! The tag says 14-71. But no electric start or as far as I can see rope either? There's what appears to be a hand wheel on the three groove engine pully. Not sure how v- belts ride on the big flywheel? Belts are gone. There's an idler pully. also flat type.Found extra needle & worm gears for the knotters in the twine tub. Let the fun begin!!!!! Thanks again, Brad in MO.

Once the engine is ready and you go to run the baler, the first thing you want to do is make sure the slip clutch(s) are clean and working. I took out the stationary knife on one of mine because the clutch on the flywheel was stuck. The plunger was out of wack and the knifes hit each other. OUCH! Of course there is one on the flywheel. Depending on year you may have one on the shaft that feeds across to the pickup drive (prior to s/n 3179). It would be up under the sheet metal above the pickup. I don't think the belt driven pickup used one (the belts slip), but if it has a chain drive it should.

The drive belts do ride on a smooth flywheel. There should be two belt retaining brackets mounted on the front up next to the flywheel. If you look at the flywheel from the front they should be at 3 & 6 o'clock. My parts book doesn't give a size for the belts, so I can't help ya there.

I would think it's would be a fun project. But I wouldn't pay much up front. I have a Ford 542 pto baler that I got for free. After $300 worth of bearings and several hours of my time it works really well.

I see manuals for old Ford balers on ebay from time to time.

The link below is a semi-official website for a quasi-organized group of Ford baler owners.
