New Holland rake/tedder

Hi Boys,

Any of you folks have or have ever had a New Holland rake and tedder combo unit. There is a guy selling one up here and I was told the stink. I have a NH 56 roll bar rake ( good ) and a Duetz Farr tedder ( good ) but this is a three point unit and it is newer, 13 years old. My NH dealer said they stink and he has sold two his 15 years in business. Any ideas ? Thanks guys

I had a NH 254 and sold it and now have a JD 4 star tedder and a Pequea rotary rake. Things wrong with the 254: The plastic cam follower rollers wear but are easy and inexpensive to replace. Over time the cast cam wears too. The plastic bushings that the tine arms rotate in wear. The grease fittings won"t stay in the plastic so it is near impossible to keep these greased. The 255 has metal bearings to alleviate this problem. The roll pins and pivot points where the tine arms pivot wear. I drilled out large nuts to the proper size and welded them on to fix this. The mounted 3 pt hitch 254 is harder to hook up than a drawn machine. Positive apsects of the 254 are: One machine, easy to set and use, quick to change from tedder to rake, and it does a fair job of raking or teddering. My wife liked mine as you pick it up on the ends and put it down when you completed the turn and the windrow was always behind you. The reason I got rid of mine was that with the center windrow it took 3 passed to make a double windrow in light hay. I did like the light fluffy windrow which is the reason I went to a rotary rake. FYI I like the Pequea rake and could spend several more paragraphs telling you what is wrong with the JD tedder.

I have a 254, and would not trade it for anything. Had and old wheel rake before that and the NH tedder just runs circles around it. I had time when mother nature change her mind and made it rain. I had too spread the wind rows back out and tedder them up again after it dried. Sure has paid for itself.

John, How have ya been? Got me thinkin did ya ever do anything with the tedder ya got from my dad? The NH I have seen were very similar. I almost bought one last year, but ended up with a Vicon instead. They all seem about the same anymore. The Rake/Ted combos dont make a nice tight clean windrow but they make a big fluffy windrow. Should be cuttin hay this week here. Corn is 2" or so. Hope all is well out there. Talk to ya later..Jim

Jimmy,

I still have th etedder from you and your dad. I painted it last year and it runs fine. I just saw a guy selling a NH 254 and he want $1500 and I thought maybe I could sell the ted and 56 NH I have and come clena for a newer rig ? I have only got one bad report on the 254, so I might get it. I guess if it sucks, I could sell it, but it seems to be good. Sure will make moving equipment easier. Glad life is good. Man, hay is a month away here for sure, 50 degree today, rain, man, I can't wait. Stay in touch.

I have a 255 and love it. I have used it for three years now and have been real happy with the job it does. They made some improvements over the 254 model. I have been told they are high maintanance but I don't beat the sh_t out of my equipment. Have seen them go for under 1000. Takes a while to figure out the right ground speed and setting on the rake. The manual helps a lot for that.

I also bought a new 255 3 years ago. It is a wonderful machine. I have had no problems with it at all. Makes a beautiful,fluffy, fast drying windrow. No dirt, no roping and lifts high enough to clear previously raked windrows on turns. I traded in a 1 year old 257 on it. Prior to that, I had a 56. No comparison. And the teding feature is good too, although I have not had a lot of need for it yet.

I had a NH 255 rake/tedder had it one year didn't like it. The bearings kept coming out of the cam and the latches also would break. My NH dealer told me when I went to trade it in on a tedder that the rake/tedder is a high maintenance item. I also had a deutz'fahr tedder and I sold it this spring to get a 2 row sitrex tedder. The deutz-fahr that I had was a one row pull type and it was a very good little unit.
