Howdy, all.

I have a 5' bushhog I run behind my Farmall Super A, and it actually runs it just fine. The only thing I really worry about is stressing the final drive housings (where my brackets for my lift arms are bolted) or my fenders (where the hydraulic lift arm is mounted) under the weight of the thing. I would guesstimate it to weigh somewhere around 500 to 600 pounds, and it is a three-point type with a single trailing wheel (unknown brand-- old and painted grey.) It's as tough as nails, but I'd really like to get something lighter. Has anyone had any experience with lighter bushhogs? The only ones I've really even looked at are the king kutter brand ones at TSC, and they didn't look like they'd hold up too well. I don't mind welding them up if the break, but I really want something with a tough gearbox.

Thanks for any experiences or suggestions y'all can relate.

Darren

I'm no expert, but nobody else has answered, so I'll take a stab. I spent a lot of time on the phone a couple of years back looking for parts for my old no-name bush hog and discovered most of them are assembled by small mom-and-pop shops using similar/the same parts--gearboxes, shafts and such. The major differences are welding and gauge of framing and sheet metal.

So my guess is that most any lightweight will be about the same...to make the thing lighter, they give up weight on the frame and sheet. A 40 hp rated gearbox is probably the same on most/all of these things, as I believe there are just a few companies making them.

My own lightweight was made by HICO (Howze Implement Company) and I abused and used it for years before it finally gave up the ghost this past fall. It was probably at least a dozen years old at that point.
