Old New Holland spreader---bearing question.

Just bought an old New Holland manure spreader to convert to a wood trailer. I cut the beaters out, and it makes a dandy trailer to load up then use the apron to dump the wood.

Problem is that the left wheel bearing appears shot. The top of the tire is rubbing on the drive shaft.

Anybody ever had this problem? Am I going to need the races and the bearing, or might just packing the bearing do it? It's not a daily user, and not a long distance hauler either.

I appreciate any input you might have.

This is a smaller spreader, but no model # on it that I see.

Thanks!

Yup look at the axle. Replaced a few NH speaders over the years due to this, always the left side also. The left sticks out further than the right to allow for the bar that runs the tail gate if equipped. The right seems to be protected more by the angle of the side. May be able to reinforce it with a few pieces of channel iron. Jack it up and weld in place. That is what we did to get a few more years out of them.

I agree with "pipes" . You'll probably find it's the axle. They were made with channel iron with a plate covering the "U" chanel between the box sides and the stub axle. That cover would rust through and crud accumulates in the channel and rusts right through. My 327 NH spreader is still ok , but I was made aware of the problem in time to fix it.

Hi Brian,
had the same thing happen on one of mine, check your axle. hate to say it,but thats what ended up rusting/breaking on mine. Was hoping it was just a bearing too but,,, Hopfully yours is not the axle!!
Good luck!
