I know this doesn"t particularly belong on a farm machinery site, but since most of you are farmers like me, we probably drive the same kinds of roads and distances. Anyway, my wife traded in her 94 Intrepid with a 3.3 and 180,000 miles for A new 04 Intrepid with a 2.7. The 94 got 27 MPG. in the summer and 25-26 MPG in the winter. This 04 got 25 once but most of the time it"s around 21-23. It has had this kind of mileage from day one and now it has 10"000 miles with no improvement. The window sticker claims 21 city and 29 highway which is only relevant, but the way she drives it should be more toward the 29 side. I know about the sludge problem with the 2.7"s and she changes oil every 2000 miles without fail. She also keeps meticulous mileage records and we have tried both ethanol and non-ethanol fuel with not a whole lot of difference in mileage. Do any of you guys and gals drive an 04 Intrepid with a 2.7? What"s your mileage? My dealer is stonewalling me and I am about to write to the company but I need to compare with other owners first. I"m about to trade it for a Toyota. Maybe that"ll get the dealer"s attention!

It"s the engine.... originally designed by Mitsubishi and used by DCH. LOTS of problems. We changed oil in my wife"s every 3000 per handbook and sludge killed it at 107000 mi. We never got better than 22mpg. Check out dontbuyone.com about this engine. Our dealer, dist rep and Detroit Headquarters have stonwalled us and many more owners. The engine was designed with .001 tolerance on the main bearings... a real sludge factory. We will never buy any Daimler CH product

We have a 1999 Intrepid with the 2.7 engine it has 245000 miles on it . The best mileage we got was comming from Louisville to St. Louis on highway 64 when the car was just a couple of years old it got 35 on that trip ,but averaged in the upper 20"s until around 200000 miles and it dropped off to mid 20"s but I feel that is due to wear. It has been a good car. Maybe you should try a different dealer.

Fixerupper, just a story..a co worker complained to me one day that his car was giving him poor mileage, he had it tuned up but it didn't help,I wondered if a brake was grabbing but he said he checked..no hot hubs etc, so I said 'Have you checked your tire pressure lately'..he got a funny look on his face, then admitted no. That was his problem. Tire should be checked weekly if you drive a daily distance to work etc. This may have no significance to your situation, but check anyway then you can pursue other options including a royal rumpus with your dealer..good luck

I will check the tires in the morning just to be sure. These new low profile 16's can look like they are ok when they are almost flat. My dealer told me that 27 was exceptionally good for the 94 and that he had never heard of anyone getting that good of mileage. Welllll . I have talked to a lot of other people with older Intrepids that get up to 30. One guy got 30 with what I believe was a 2001 with a 3.5. my dealer told me he can't do anything to it if no warning light are lit up. I can feel a rumpus coming!

you can check for error codes without a scanner on mopars- turn the key on, off, on, off, on, and it will give a four digit code over the odometer (98-up) or a 2-digit code flashed on the check engine light(95-97). Haynes manuals list all of the codes. I just sold my 96 breeze with a 2.0 liter and it's been getting about 25 lately, 130,000 on it now, 25,000 miles ago it was getting over 30 regularly and if i filled up at the right station closer to 40, and one tank ran just shy of 45. It is also sensitive to octane rating, What's your v-6 call for? Also give a 2.4L a spin, it's enough to get my dad and I in trouble in his cirrus. He also gets upward of 35mpg on the highway but it sucks it right down on back roads. Something to do with a lead foot, I think.

A friend of mine was having trouble with his Dakota a while back and after several trips to the dealer with them not finding anything wrong it died his fault you know.
Got to checking online at NTSB and found out the govt. has been trying to get D.C. to fix a lot of problems with their cars and they wont so I for one will not buy a Chrysler product. My friend went with Toyota.
