Manure spreader for hay?

Have some old mulch hay in square bales I want to spread to get out of the barn.

Can I load the bales into my old manure spreader and use it to spread the hay without damaging the spreader? I don't want to spread hay thick enough to kill grass, just to get rid of it and let it decompose on the fields...seems like the manure spreader would do the job pretty quick.

thanks,
Tom A

Dairy farmers have been bedding their loose housing pole barns for years by loading small squares in the spreader, cutting the strings, and running the conveyor slowly to distribute the straw. Beats doing it by hand.

I dont know about how thin it will spread it, mine is set to drop pretty heavy (and long since rusted to where that is the only setting) but I use it to feed with (sometimes). When we empty a barn usually put the boken bales that we couldnt save into the spreader and I run it out in a pile (PTO driven) for the dry mares. Also have used it to feed silage out of a tube, just turn off the back beater.

It will depend on your spreader how well this works. My uncle once said "There are manure speaders and there are manure unloaders." I don't think you can damage your spreader. Give it a try and let us know.

should work OK - but it might work better if you put something heavy like one big dump of dirt or manure on the top so it can't be fluffy and the beaters have to take it off bit by bit

Go ahead. If the spreader throws out chunks, run over it with your Bush Hog Shredder.

I doubt if you will harm the spreader, but I don't think the spreader will do a good job of scattering the hay unless you break the hay up pretty good before you put it in the spreader. If all you do is take the strings off, the spreader will just throw out the chunks intact.

I cleaned out about a foot of hay from an old barn and used an old Oliver spreader. Never had a problem.

Will have to shred bales good as you load or it will throw out wavers of hay unless the bales are decade a good bit the dry hay will wrap around beaters

Make sure you take the strings off when you put them in the spreader, lot easier than taking them off the beaters

Some people around here have used manure spreaders to put out Coastal bermuda sprigs. I don't know what kind of problems they had. It should work on hay also.

Bermuda sprigs, huh. Can you tell me a bit more about that. We've been thinking about sprigging here, but the cost to have it done is outta site. Now if we could use our manure spreader....Hmmmm.

Neighbours hired hand decided to use spreader last year to clean out the barn... He managed to break the bed chain...

As for getting strings off the beater, especially plastic ones, just grab a small propane torch. Run it over the strings and pull em free.
