I previously posted a question about loose bale strings on a NH 66, and got some good answers. Thanks to everyone that helped. The consensus was that I should increase bale density to make the bales tighter, but I went through that last year, and all I got were heavier bales with loose strings :)I did more troubleshooting, and the problem was related to the twine tensioners. Over the past 50 years, the springs on the adjusting bolts had lost their 'springiness', so either there was too little tension (~ 10 lbs pull) or if you compressed the spring completely there was too much (~ 50 lbs pull, breaking strings). I got two replacement springs at the hardware store that are maybe 50% more stiff, and now the twine stays taut as the bales accumulate in the chamber. I think a tension of maybe 25 lbs is needed, but I need to get a fish scale to measure. I wanted to follow up, because there are other messages in the archives that describe similar symptoms, so maybe this will help. Michael
