Sprayer Problem

I have a 3 pt sprayer that uses a 6 roller pto pump and when I set the pressure on the regulator valve and then increase the pto rpm the pressure increases. I thought the regulator was supposed to hold the pressure constant (hence the name "regulator")but it doesn't. I've looked through the owners manual and everything is hooked up properly. I have replaced the regulator and the result is the same. It doesn't hold the pressure constant with changes in pump speed. What am I missing? Is the pump to large in capacity for the regulator?

Excuse me for being too technical (I'm an engineer). You do not have a regulator. The releif valve only controls the maximum pressure by bypassing excess pressure. It does not care about any pressure below its setting or what the flow going through th main line is. You cannot reach that pressure untill the pump flow is more than the nozzles can support at that pressure. If you want higher pressure with certain nozzles, you have to increase flow (bigger pump or more rpm). Nozzles are rated at a certain flow and pressure.

Thanks for the responses guys. I figure that my problem is that my pump is putting out more flow than my bypass line can handle.At 540 pto rpm, the pump delivers up to 9.7 gpm while my boom only needs a 1 gpm. That means the regulator has to bypass 8.7 gpm through a 1/2" line. I don't believe that's possible.
If I built a bypass line in the pump outlet line with a throttle valve in it and bypass, say 7 gpm, then the regulator will be able to bypass the 1.7 gpm and the boom would take it's 1 gpm and regulator could maintain the pressure as the rpm moved up and down. The other alternative is to put in a bigger return line, say 3/4" and hope that there was enough valve area variation to maintain the pressure regulation. I know the former method will work, the 2nd method, while easier may or may not work. A third alternative would be to get a bigger regulating valve along with a increased reurn line size. Again, it may work if the regulator area variation is the limiting variable.

I agree with 76. At idle your pump is not putting out much pressure, so the regulator isn't doing much really, you can set it where you want, volume will be low coming out of the pump and most of the fluid will be going through the agitation line, little pressure build up for the boom line.

You need to set your pressure regulator at operating rpms. Then when you are at idle, the regulator will _try_ to keep the pressure up, but likely with an agitation line you simply won't be producing enough pressure to keep the pressure high enough - the regulator is doing nothing.

Typically you are fighting rpm differences (volume) from idle to operating speed, and pressure can go to the boom through the regulator, as well as some bleeding off to the agitation line. At idle, the agitation line handles most fluid and little pressure is built up.

That agitation line makes this less than perfect science - if we wanted perfect, I guess we should put a low-pressure regulator in it as well. :)

I should rephrase what I said. Them regulator is a constant. But you have to reach the limit at which it becomes a regulator. Look at it like it was compressed air. Lets say we have 30lbs in our line. Then we set our regulator at 30lbs. Even if we turn our line pressure up to 120lbs. We still read 30lbs. But if we just turn our regulator up to 30lbs, then turn it up a couple more times. The regulator would still read 30lbs. If we increase our line pressure to 120lbs. Then it possible that our regulator would re 120lbs right? So I hope you can see what I mean about setting it at you working rpm. Try that. If that doesn't work, see if your bypass line is plugged.

There is nothing wrong with your sprayer or pump. Think of it like this. You set you regulator at 35lbs @ 200 rpm. When you bump your throttle up and turn at 540 rpm you pressure will increase. So you might have 50lbs. What I am trying to say to you is this. You have to set your pressure at the rpm you wish to run. The regulator is not a constant. Nor is the pump. The constant is your rpm. I know some will disagree with me. But this is what works for me. I hope you understand my babble. I tend not to explain things real good.
